For the past four years, WADL, along with all state ADF affiliates, have been sponsored by the Department of Immigration, and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs ("DIMIA"), whose generous support greatly assisted WADL with the recent hosting of the National Schools Debating Championships.Their ongoing support is vital in helping to meet the expenses of our growing competition.

In 2005, WADL was also very fortunate to receive assistance from, and extends our thanks to, Philosophy at the University of Western Australia. Their sponsorship of a round of the year's competition was part of the same programme which saw all the libraries of all WA high schools teaching to Years 11 and 12 receive a subscription to the periodical "Philosophy Now".

The first round debates sponsored by Philosophy at the University of Western Australia were conducted over the 7th, 8th, 15th and 16th March. The debates were an enormous success, and we thank Philosophy for their involvement and look forward to working with them again in the future.

Wihile grateful for the assistance of our sponsors, WADL continues to seek out new sponsorship opportunities to assist with our long term goals of increasing the level of debating throughout regional Western Australia through introduction of local competitions in regional centres. To that end, we have prepared the below sponsorship opportunities outline. If you are interested in sponsoring the WADL Schools Competitionand require further information then please contact our sponsorship officer Lyn-Lee Teh.

Our Organisation

The West Australian Debating League (“WADL”) is a non profit, incorporated communityorganisation responsible for the promotion of debating in Western Australia.

Since 1969 WADL has convened the premier schools debating competition in Western Australia and, with 45% more teams than 5 years ago, we are one of the fastest growing debating leagues in Australia.

WADL is managed by a committee of 13 young professionals, students and ex-debaters who volunteer large amounts of time and effort to ensure the growth and prosperity of debating in Western Australia. Our competition is funded solely by the affiliation and team fees that we charge our member schools.

Particularly since our incorporation in 1997, WADL has gained a reputation as being a well managed, transparent and financially stable community organisation.

Our Competition

This year, approximately 1500 secondary schools students from 49 private and government schools from across the Perth metropolitan area will compete in the WADL competition, representing their schools in formal debates and arguing a wide range of topics concerning current domestic and international issues.

Our competition runs from March to August each year at 4 venues across the Perth Metropolitan area. At each debate there are often numerous (and vocal) spectators, usually comprising students, teachers, family and friends.

Over the years, the WADL competition has helped literally thousands of students develop the speaking skills and confidence necessary to achieve their goals and excel in debating, tertiary studies and the workforce.

At a time when these skills are becoming increasingly more important, we believe that WADL and debating in general plays an important role in primary and secondary education, a belief shared by the many schools that join our competition each year.

National Schools Debating Championships

WADL also selects, trains and finances the West Australian Schools Debating Team which competes at the annual National Schools Debating Championships against the best schools debaters from around Australia.

Each year each state and territory affiliate of the Australian Debating Federation, including WADL, selects a team of its best four secondary school debaters to represent that state or territory at the Championships. Therefore, the best secondary schools debaters in Australia meet at the Championships to compete for the honour of National champions.

WA has performed with distinction at the Championships in the past 6 years having wonthe title twice and again making the grand final in 1999.

The best six debaters at the Championships are chosen to represent Australia at the annual World Schools Debating Championships, which in recent years have been held atSingapore, Johannesburg, Pittsburgh and London. Since 1997 the Australian team has won the Championships five times and finished runner-up once, an amazing achievement.

A reflection of the outstanding quality of the WADL competition is the fact that WADL debaters are consistently selected to represent Australia at the World Championships and rank among the top speakers in the world. In 2002 two of the five Australian Team members were WADL debaters. This year one of the World Champion Australian team, and the coach, are WADL debaters.

In August 2004 WADL hosted the 33rd Australian Schools Debating Championships, the first time WADL has hosted the Championships since 1997.

The opening debate was held at the Supreme Court of Western Australia and chaired by His Honour Chief Justice Malcolm. The qualifying rounds were held at some of the best secondary schools in Perth to allow students from that and surrounding schools to see the best debaters in Australia in action. In 1997, when the Championships were last held in Perth, some of the debates were attended by hundreds of students. The closing debate was held at the Chamber of the Legislative Council at Parliament House. Throughout the course of the Championships, thousands of students, teachers and members of the general public were able to watch and enjoy Nationals debates.

Community Support

WADL actively supports a number of community organisations and debating and public speaking events each year. We have a long running association with Rotary and the Associated Heads of Independent Schools Association (AHISA) in particular.

In 2001-2004 we have provided support to:-

  • Various regional primary and secondary school debating competitions
  • High School Country Week Speech Awards
  • Rotary Four-Way Speaking Competition
  • Swan View District Debating Competition
  • AHISA Debating Competition
  • National Schools Debating Championships
  • Environment Week (City of Perth)
  • Smogbusters (Department of Transport)

The Benefits of Sponsorship of WADL

Sponsorship of WADL offers an opportunity for prominent, positive publicity within the community through support for the youth of Western Australia. It can provide direct access to thousands of students and spectators who are involved in the WADL and National Schools Competitions.

WADL is seeking a sponsor for our competition and the State Team. Depending upon the level of support offered, this could benefit the sponsor in the following way:-

  • Naming rights to the Competition;
  • Naming rights to the State team;
  • An announcement and acknowledgement of the sponsorship at the commencement of each WADL debate;
  • Topics that focus attention and encourage discussion on areas of interest to the sponsor;
  • The sponsor's logo on all WADL correspondence, promotional material, banners, pennants and trophies;
  • The sponsor's logo on the blazers of the State Team and acknowledgement of your sponsorship at each WA debate at the National Championships;.
  • The sponsor's logo prominently displayed on the WADL web-page.

The success of WADL debaters at the National and World Championships has not gone unnoticed. Each year articles are run in the West Australian and local newspapers abouttheir successes and radio stations such as 98.5FM have devoted airtime in the past to cover the achievements of the State Team and WADL debaters at the World Championships.

The Benefits of Sponsorship to WADL

Sponsorship would benefit us in many ways, including:-

Subsidies for new schools wanting to join the WADL competition. At the moment team fees are quite high ($95.00 per team) which prevents many smaller schools from entering multiple teams, if at all. Sponsorship would allow us to reduce team fees and heavily subsidise new schools (particularly small independent schools and state schools) wanting to enter our competition;

Free WADL coaching for new schools. Sponsorship would enable WADL to fund adjudicators to attend at new schools, free of charge, and coach new and inexperiencedschools. This is very important as WADL is a high quality and competitive competition which can make new teams feel a little overawed without the necessary support and coaching.

Increased Funding for the State Team. At present WADL can only afford to fund 3 members of  the State Team and 1 reserve to attend the National Championships. Team members must also pay for their own blazers. Given that the majority of the team is usually made up of Year 12 students who will not be back to compete the following year, WA is continually at a disadvantage compared to sponsored Leagues in other States which can afford to send several Yr 10 and 11 reserves to give them experience for the following year.

Increased Funding for Promotion and Development of Debating. With additional funds WADL would be able to prepare promotional material and advertise to increase the number of schools in the competition and spread debating in Western Australia.

In summary, WADL sponsorships offers an opportunity for positive and wide-spread publicity through an association with an established and highly regarded community organisation.
