There are a significant number of guides to debating on this site and other debating related sites on the Internet. WADL strongly encourages all debating co-ordinators and students involved in the WADL schools competition to familiarise themselves with these guides. It is of fundamental importance in your development as a compelling and effective debater that you master the technical aspects of what is a highly stylised and formalistic pursuit.

Given the wide variety of debating materials available on-line, and the number of significantly different debating styles employed in contemporary competition, you may encounter conflicting information when carrying out debating research. In the event of such conflict, for the purposes of the WADL Schools' competition, the information contained on this website and the website of the Australian Debating Federation are to always take precedence.

WADL Guides

Numerous WADL members have written debating guides and other resources over the years, most notably Andrea Coomber in her time as WADL president.

Folllowing on from the 2005 Schools' Seminar we have also made available online the outline of the night's seminar presentation. This outline focusses on how teams should approach topics issued by WADL, using an example topic to illustrate the correct approach to defining the topic, coming up with a team theme and splitting material between the speakers. It also briefly outlines some of the unique aspects of senior style debating, such as reply speeches and point of information. The document is also avaialble in Microsoft Word and PDF format.

The "Debating Tips" document is an excellent resource for those beginning a debating career. It provides a detailed examination of the entire 'life-cycle' of a debate, from the preparation to be undertaken before a debate, to the process of defining the topic, through to the roles of individual speakers. All three component parts of the "Debating Tips" guide are downloadable as a single PDF document.
